The South Old and New: A History 1820-1947, Francis Butler Simkins

Francis Butler Simkins taught history of Longwood College and was president of the Southern Historical Association. He was one of the authors of seventh-grade textbooks produced by the Virginia History and Textbook Commission in the 1950s.

This book is a highly praised history of the South in the reconstruction period "that gave fair coverage to all sides".
