18th Century French Leather Book Set, 1750 - Œuvres de Regnard, Volumes I-IV, Gilt Calf, 4 Volumes

A truly special run of four 18th-century French books in warm, time-worn mottled calf leather, with richly gilt-tooled spines covered in flowers, sprigs, and dots, and deep red leather title labels. The covers are finished in a beautiful speckled tortoiseshell pattern in caramel and chocolate brown. Small, chunky, and full of character, they bring genuine 1700s history to a curio cabinet, library shelf, or desk, or any French antique or Old World interior.

This is Volumes I through IV of the collected works of Jean-François Regnard, the most celebrated French comic playwright after Molière, printed in Paris in 1750 "avec Approbation & Privilège du Roy" (with the King's approval and privilege). Each volume opens to a striking red-and-black title page with a charming engraved vignette of cherubs or allegorical figures.

Together they measure approximately 5.75 x 4 inches.

At more than 270 years old, these books show heavier wear, including crazed and cracked leather, chipped spine ends, rubbed corners, exposed binding at the foot of one spine, a partially missing volume label on Tome III, and a missing title label on Tome I.
