A warm, honey-toned set of four antique French books in half-leather bindings, in shades of caramel, cognac, and tan with gilt-tooled spines and jewel-toned leather labels in oxblood, deep green, and navy. The marbled boards add even more charm, with tortoiseshell brown and gold, mottled mustard with green flecks, and one striking cobalt blue. It's a beautiful, classic stack for a library shelf, a study, or a traditional or French country interior.

Dating from 1851 to 1893, the set covers a wonderful range of French letters: Alexis Pierron's award-winning translation of the plays of Aeschylus, Madame de Staël's influential study of German culture (famously suppressed by Napoleon) with an engraved portrait of the author, the poems of André Chénier with his portrait, and a novel by Paul Bourget. The Aeschylus spine is especially pretty, with ornate gilt floral panels.

Together they measure approximately 7 x 4.25 inches.

This set includes:
📜 Théâtre d'Eschyle, translated by Alexis Pierron (Paris, G. Charpentier)
📜 Cruelle Énigme, by Paul Bourget (Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1893)
📜 De l'Allemagne, by Madame de Staël (Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1882)
📜 Poésies de André Chénier, with a notice by H. de Latouche (Paris, Charpentier, 1851)

**Condition**
The leather shows rubbing and wear to the spine ends, raised bands, and edges, and the pages have scattered foxing. De l'Allemagne has a faint offset image of the portrait on its title page.
