Antique French Red Book Set, 1861-1890, Les Malheurs de Sophie, Bibliothèque Rose & Prize Books, Cartonnage

A lovely set of seven antique French books in shades of rose, raspberry, and brick red with ornate gilt and black tooling. The covers are a treat: two Bibliothèque Rose Illustrée bindings with gilt cherubs and scrollwork, two stamped in gold with a school prize wreath, and one with an Art Nouveau design. They're perfect for a French country or cottage shelf, a side table, or a red-and-gold holiday display.

Dating from 1861 to 1890, the set includes the Comtesse de Ségur's beloved Les Malheurs de Sophie (1866), Mme J. Colomb's Souffre-Douleur, two Alfred Mame titles from Tours, a children's Bible, and a Marian devotional. Several are 19th-century school prize books, including one with an engraved prize label from the Pensionnat de St. Joseph in Saint-Étienne, handwritten and dated 1864.

Together they measure approximately 8.25 x 5.25 inches.
