Antique Gold, Black, and Red French Leather Book Set of Les Petits Béarnais by Delafaye, 1824, 4 Volumes

A set of four antique French schoolbooks bound in worn brown leather with red morocco spine labels and gilt tooling, carrying all the soft, well-loved patina of a book that's been read and handled for two centuries.

This complete four-volume run of Les Petits Béarnais, ou Leçons de Morale by Mme Julie Delafaye (Bréhier) is a moral tale for young readers set partly in the Béarn region of France. One volume carries a lovely piece of provenance: a handwritten note recording that this very copy was awarded as a school prize to a student in 1829, alongside a Bordeaux bookseller's label from the original point of sale.

Together they measure approximately 5.5 x 3.25 inches.

This set shows heavier wear than typical for our vintage books, including significant rubbing to the leather and softened corners consistent with well-used 19th-century schoolbooks.
