A collectible set of two books by Bruce Bairnsfather, the British soldier and cartoonist whose humorous yet poignant depictions of trench life made him one of the most beloved voices of the First World War.
Bullets & Billets (1917): Bairnsfather’s first memoir, written and illustrated while the war was still underway, offers a candid and often comic portrayal of life in the trenches, accompanied by his iconic “Old Bill” cartoons.
From Mud to Mufti (1919, Second Impression): A follow-up volume written after the Armistice, reflecting on his wartime service and return to civilian life. Illustrated with his trademark sketches, it balances humor with the sobering realities of war’s aftermath.
Both published by Putnam and Sons. Both in good condition, with shelf wear and foxing. Bullets & Billets has a hand-drawn illustration of a soldier by a previous owner on the first page.
