Part of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle's After-School Series for 1890–91, this volume by William Cleaver Wilkinson was published by the Chautauqua Press in New York in 1890.

The Chautauqua movement offered structured home reading programs for adults seeking continuing education, and this book served as the French literature component of that year's curriculum.

Wilkinson surveys French literature chronologically across twenty-five chapters, devoting individual sections to major authors including Froissart, Rabelais, Montaigne, La Rochefoucauld, La Fontaine, Molière, Pascal, Racine, Voltaire, Rousseau, the Encyclopédists, Madame de Staël, Chateaubriand, and others through the Group of 1830, with an epilogue and index.

The front pastedown carries a period ink inscription from 1890.

The dark green cloth boards show wear at the spine ends and corners, with some fraying to the cloth at the head of the spine. The binding remains intact. Interior pages are toned with age but legible throughout. No other markings are visible in the photos beyond the ownership inscription.
