Who wrote it: The Columbia Encyclopedia in One Volume was compiled and edited at Columbia University under editor in chief Clarke F. Ansley, and published by Columbia University Press in New York. This copy is the Sixteenth Printing of 1945.
What it's about: Famous for packing the whole of human knowledge into a single enormous volume, the Columbia Encyclopedia was a fixture of mid century homes, schools, and libraries. Its thousands of concise entries make it both a working reference and a window into what the world knew, and valued, in the 1940s.
Special features: This is the thumb-indexed one volume edition, a genuinely hefty book running to nearly two thousand pages of entries.
Why I like it: I love a giant reference book - a thing of the past!
Condition: Tan cloth hardcover with dark green spine label and gilt lettering; no dust jacket. Thumb-indexed, with soiling and edge wear to the boards and age tanning to the pages; binding becoming loose. Please review all photos carefully, and email me with any questions.
