Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon, 1953, Falcon Press Selected Prose
Who wrote it: This selection from Edward Gibbon's history was chosen and introduced by Simon Harcourt-Smith, first published in 1953 by The Falcon Press of London.
What it's about: Short passages from the great work, the character of Zenobia, the siege of Palmyra, the excesses of Commodus and Elagabalus, Julian's attempt to restore paganism, and the destruction of the Temple of Serapis. A graceful way into Gibbon without committing to all six volumes.
Condition: Mustard buckram hardcover, no dust jacket; light soiling and a small stain near the lower corner of the front board, previous owner signature and offset browning on the front endpapers. Please review all photos carefully, and email me with any questions.
Thanks so much for visiting,
❤️ Jess
