The Four Gospels Harmonized and Translated presents Tolstoy's controversial synthesis and retranslation of the Gospel texts from the original Greek, both volumes combined in one book. Translated and edited by Professor Leo Wiener; published by Willey Book Co., New York, copyright 1904 by Dana Estes & Company.

Late in life, Tolstoy became convinced the Orthodox Church had distorted the Gospels and set out to produce his own translation, stripping the text to what he believed was Christ's original ethical teaching. Banned in Russia during his lifetime, this remains a fascinating document of one of literature's greatest minds wrestling with faith.

Dark brown cloth hardcover with gold script lettering on front and decorative embossing on spine. Significant wear and fraying at spine ends; boards sound. Please review all photos carefully, and email me with any questions.
