French Antique Alfred de Musset Book Set, 1863-1864, Dark Green Half Leather with Gilt Spines

A lovely pair of antique French books by Alfred de Musset in deep forest green half leather, with gilt lettering and rows of tiny gilt dots across the raised spine bands. Pebble-grained black boards and beautiful cream marbled endpapers veined in black and red complete the look. The dark, moody green is wonderful in a library or study, or anywhere with rich jewel tones and brass accents.

Musset was one of the great poets and playwrights of French Romanticism, and these matching Charpentier editions from 1863 and 1864 hold two of his best-known works: his semi-autobiographical novel La Confession d'un Enfant du Siècle, and his collected Comédies et Proverbes, witty plays still performed at the Comédie-Française today. Look closely and you'll spot a charming binder's typo on one spine, which reads "Enfatn."
