A Pulitzer Prize-winning work of American regional history, presented here as a complete two-volume slipcased first edition. Paul Horgan's Great River traces the full sweep of the Rio Grande's human story, from the aboriginal peoples of the Southwest through the Spanish conquest, Mexican independence, and the making of the United States.

Volume 1 covers Indians and Spain; Volume 2, Mexico and the United States. Horgan spent fifteen years researching the book and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for the project; it went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1955.

The two volumes are bound in dark slate cloth with gilt lettering and are housed in the original illustrated slipcase, which features a watercolor landscape of the desert Southwest. The books are solid and square, with spines bright and lettering intact. The slipcase shows its age honestly: the top edge and corners are worn and frayed, with some soiling to the black panels, but the landscape artwork remains vivid and presentable.
