Hafiz: The Tongue of the Hidden is an adaptation by Clarence K. Streit of the rubaiyat of the fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz, published by The Viking Press in New York in 1928. Described on the title page as an attempt to transfuse into English rubaiyat the spirit of the Persian poet, as felt by Clarence K. Streit, it includes a foreword, a proem, an epilogue, a sketch of the life of Hafiz, and a note on the adaptation.
Each page of verse is headed with a band of Arabic calligraphy printed in red, giving the book a typographic character that reflects the source culture with unusual care for the period.
Royal blue cloth hardcover with gilt Arabic-script ornamental design and cartouche; covers show some general wear with light fading at edges. Interior clean with pages sound. Please review all photos carefully, and email me with any questions.
