What it's about: Billed as a practical, authoritative handbook for furnishing and decorating rooms of every size, type, and period, it draws on the work of 126 decorators, architects, and designers of the day. It reads now as a snapshot of postwar American taste, equal parts how-to manual and time capsule.

Special features: The book is dense with reference material, 141 rooms shown in color, 354 photographs, and 852 line drawings, including full color theory charts and a spread identifying Duncan Phyfe's signature Federal furniture motifs.
