Who wrote it: House and Home is a manual and textbook of practical house planning by Greta Gray, Ph.D., with an article by architect Richard J. Neutra, published by J.B. Lippincott Company in this Third Edition, Revised, copyright 1935.

What it's about: Gray, an architecture graduate of MIT who also taught household arts at Columbia and public health at Yale, walks readers through house location, floor plans, materials, plumbing, heating, and historic architectural styles. It was written as a college textbook for home economics students planning houses of their own, and it captures a very Depression-era mix of practicality and domestic idealism.

Special features: This copy was once part of a school's Home Economics Department library, and it still holds its original card pocket with a handwritten catalog card reading "Gray, Greta, House and Home," along with a blank Date Due card.
