Who wrote it: The Illuminated Rumi brings together translations and commentary by Coleman Barks, the poet most responsible for introducing Rumi to American readers, with illuminations by artist Michael Green. Published by Broadway Books in 1997, this is the first edition.

What it's about: The book pairs Barks's accessible, lyrical translations of the 13th-century Persian poet Jalal ad-Din Rumi with full-color illuminated artwork, making it as beautiful to look at as it is to read.

Special features: Michael Green's illuminations are inspired by Persian manuscript art and run throughout the book, making this as much an art object as a poetry collection.

Why I like it: This is a welcoming and engaging introduction to the poetry of Rumi, and it makes a wonderful gift.
