Written by Earl Schenck Miers and published by The World Publishing Company in Cleveland in 1955, this first edition illustrated history follows the American national story from Viking settlement through the atomic age in fifty narrative chapters designed for young readers, with illustrations by James Daugherty.

Miers was among the most productive mid-century writers of American popular history for children, and this first edition, with its full-color illustration and confident narrative sweep, is a collectible example of the genre at its most optimistic.

James Daugherty's illustrations appear throughout in full color and black-and-white, combining historical figures, battles, and emblematic scenes in the bold, declarative style he brought to American history illustration across several decades.

Red cloth hardcover with a blue and white eagle emblem on the front board; torn corner at the lower spine base; previous owner's inscription inside the front cover. Please review all photos carefully, and email me with any questions.
