Settings & Costumes of the Modern Stage by Theodore Komisarjevsky and Lee Simonson; The Studio Winter Number, edited by C.G. Holme; published by The Studio Limited, London, and The Studio Publications Inc., New York, 1933.

A lavishly illustrated survey of theatrical design in Europe and America during the interwar period, comprising two substantial essays, one by Komisarjevsky on European practice, one by Simonson on the United States, each followed by extensive plates.

The volume documents the work of the era's most significant stage designers, including Norman Bel Geddes, Oliver Messel, Oskar Schlemmer, Fernand Léger, Moholy-Nagy, Meyerhold, Max Reinhardt, Jo Mielziner, and many others, across productions ranging from Shakespeare and opera to Broadway musicals and Soviet theatre.

Color supplements feature costume and set designs by Oliver Messel, George Sheringham, Gustave Oláh, Norman Bel Geddes, and Woodman Thompson. An index of designers and a list of productions illustrated are included.

Illustrated throughout with over 130 pages of black-and-white and color plates.

Condition: Terracotta red cloth hardcover with white lettering on front board; no dust jacket. Spine shows significant wear with cloth loss and fraying. Boards show general wear and soiling. Interior pages are clean with light toning; binding is sound. A well-used copy, complete and reading well.
