Tenase Brave by Marion Herndon Dunn is a historical children’s novel that follows the adventures of an eleven-year-old Cherokee boy living in pre-Columbian times along the Tenase River in the region of the Cumberland Plateau.
Though fictional, the story draws on carefully researched details of Cherokee life, portraying customs, skills, games, hunting traditions, and the close relationship between people and the natural world. The young protagonist, known only as “Brother,” longs to earn his true name by proving his courage, and his journey becomes a coming-of-age tale centered on responsibility, bravery, and identity.
