**Who wrote it**
The Chestry Oak was written and illustrated by Kate Seredy, published by Viking Press in 1948. This copy is a fifth printing from July 1966. Seredy, a Hungarian-American author and artist, won the Newbery Medal in 1938 and brought the same warmth and precision to her illustrations that she brought to her prose.
**What it's about**
Set during the fall of Hungary in World War II, the story follows a young prince whose beloved white stallion is taken by occupying soldiers, and what it means to hold on to hope in the wreckage of a world. It is historical fiction for young people, but it does not soften what it depicts.
**Why I like it**
This book has a devoted following, particularly among homeschooling families, and it is easy to understand why. It is a wonderful example of historical fiction for young people, written and illustrated with real feeling.
**Condition**
Red pictorial cloth hardcover with decorative cover design; no dust jacket. Binding tight and interior clean. Please review all photos carefully, and email me with any questions.
Thanks so much for visiting,
❤️ Jess
