**Who wrote it**
The Mandarins was written by Simone de Beauvoir, translated by Leonard M. Friedman, and published by the World Publishing Company in 1956. Originally published in France by Librairie Gallimard as Les Mandarins, the novel won the Prix Goncourt in 1954. This is the fourth printing.
**What it's about**
A novel about the Parisian intellectual left in the aftermath of World War II, following a group of writers, philosophers, and activists as they struggle to define what political and personal commitment means in a changed world. It is partly autobiographical, with figures drawn from de Beauvoir's own circle, and it remains one of the essential documents of mid-century French intellectual life.
**Why I like it**
This is a must for any collector of mid-century classics, and it is especially beautiful under the dust jacket, where the navy cloth and red-and-gold spine medallion really shine.
**Condition**
Navy blue cloth hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. Jacket shows some wear. Round embossed stamp on copyright page. Binding sound. Please review all photos carefully, and email me with any questions.
Thanks so much for visiting,
❤️ Jess
