The book is organized as a memoir in recipes, moving through Rudkin's life from her Connecticut farm kitchen to her travels in Europe, with each chapter rooted in a time and place.

Illustrated throughout with Erik Blegvad's black and white pen-and-ink drawings, depicting food, kitchen scenes, and domestic life in his distinctive fine-lined style.
