A scarce bound half-year volume of the Jesuit Catholic periodical The Month: A Magazine and Review, containing issues from July through December 1870, a momentous year in Catholic history, marked by the First Vatican Council and the declaration of papal infallibility.
This copy is bound in half-leather with marbled page edges and gilt titling to the spine (“The Month, July–Dec. 1870”). The front cover bears the gilt stamp “Convent of St. Louis,” with a library bookplate and borrowing rules from St. Louis’ Library, Monaghan to the pastedown.
Condition:
- Binding sound; leather rubbed and worn, especially at corners, edges, and spine (see photos).
- Marbled edges somewhat faded.
- Pages show scattered foxing and age toning typical of the era.
- Ownership/library markings present inside front cover.
- Text complete and legible.
A handsome and substantial survivor of this important Jesuit periodical, with interesting provenance linking it to a convent library in Monaghan, Ireland.
