The Practical Shepherd by Henry S. Randall, LL.D., is a comprehensive guide to sheep management covering all aspects of the craft, from the fine-wooled merino and British breeds to seasonal care, wool production, and the treatment of sheep diseases. Illustrated throughout with engravings depicting various sheep breeds, it served as an essential reference for American shepherds of the mid-nineteenth century.
This is the Thirty-First Edition, published by Excelsior Publishing House, New York, copyright 1863.
The green cloth boards are decorated with a gold-embossed sheep design. The binding is broken, with the front board detached, and the pages show foxing throughout. A handwritten ownership inscription on the interior reads “B.H. Pepper 1884, Round up, Mont.”.
