This work is a Volume 2 of a two-volume biography of Varina Howell Davis, wife of Confederate president Jefferson Davis, by Mississippi historian Eron Rowland, who drew on letters, diaries, and archival material.

Volume II continues the narrative into the Civil War years and beyond, focusing on Varina’s experiences as First Lady of the Confederacy, her role in Richmond, her hardships during wartime, and her later life after Jefferson Davis’s death.
