Westward by Rail: The New Route to the East by William Fraser Rae is a historical travel narrative that documents a transcontinental journey by rail across the United States in the late nineteenth century.
Originally written by a correspondent for the London Daily News, the book follows Rae’s 3,000-mile trip from New York to San Francisco shortly after the completion of the transcontinental railroad.
Along the way, he describes landscapes, cities, rail travel, and the social and cultural conditions of the American West, offering a firsthand perspective on westward expansion and early railroad travel.
This copy is a reprint of the 1871 edition, published by Promontory Press in New York in 1974. It is a hardcover edition with a dust jacket. This is a former library copy, with library stamps, labels, and checkout cards present on the endpapers, title page, and dust jacket.
