Who wrote it: Your Land and Mine is a civics reader by Helen M. Brindl, with pictures by I.B. Hazelton. Part of the Democracy Readers series edited by Prudence Cutright and W.W. Charters, it was published by The Macmillan Company in 1940.

What it's about: Written for elementary school children on the eve of World War II, the book uses stories and illustrations to teach the values of democracy, citizenship, and civic responsibility. It is warm, earnest, and surprisingly timely.

Special features: I.B. Hazelton's illustrations appear throughout, mixing full-color plates with black-and-white drawings to bring the lessons to life.

Why I like it: I think it is more important than ever for all of us to have a solid understanding of civics and how our government works, and books like this explore those topics in a way that is accessible and engaging for everybody.
